How complex a part determines how long it will take to 3D scan
Simple
Semi-complex
(+...)
Complex
(+...)
Objects featuring continuous, streamlined surfaces with minimal fine details, and completely free from holes, recesses, or hidden features.

Examples include a cricket ball, a bar of soap, minimalist ornaments or a Rubik’s Cube
Objects with some ribbing, holes or features that require a more mobile 3D scan. This is the most common type of complexity we see.

Examples: a kettle, a cast automotive engine cover or suspension components
Parts with geometry that is challenging to 3D scan such as deep pockets, lots of ribbing detail, tubular frames.

Examples: a wheelchair, full engine or a chandelier

This file is the the raw 3D scan data, exported as a .stl or .obj. The data captured is not usually watertight and may have holes, artefacts or some irregularities around small features.
This model is processed and cleaned-up to create one solid 3D mesh file that can be used for 3D printing.

Hole filling on these models mean the assumptions must be made by the software where the 3D scanner could not reach such as deep pockets or behind ribs. As a result, these areas won’t be dimensionally accurate.
An as-built model, or NURBS model, is the most basic level of reverse engineering. It creates a patchwork surface directly referencing the scan data, carrying any wear or defects from the original part into the model.

This approach is best suited to inspection, part analysis, CFD/FEA analysis, or applications where no design changes are needed.

Good for:
Accurate-to-life CAD; Tight surface tolerance; and Fast and low-cost CAD

Considerations:
Imperfections replicated; Limited editability; and Manufacturing issues replicated
Design Intent CAD models restore the original engineer’s vision. Instead of replicating flaws, an idealised, optimised version of the scan is created, with defects corrected to meet engineering standards. Flat surfaces are flattened and features restored for precise, reliable results.

Good for:
Manufacturing data; Restoring or improving; Correcting deformation; and Generating editable CAD

Considerations:
Takes longer to complete; CAD generated manually; A more costly service; and Assumptions made
